Background
Tyaga is one of the few techniques on this website that includes or needs the intervention of a Guru for the simple reason that this technique could only have been devised and executed by a guru. It is thus of double interest because it shows how gurus help their disciples and also something of the role of a guru on the spiritual path.
A guru act like a personal trainer, devising a specific series of steps, exercises and 'events' suited to the capabilities, evolution and character of the person concerned. For this reason there is no real 'method' that a guru follows, every method is different, - tailor made - however, I think it helps to show how a guru can ‘help’, thus in order to do so I have used an example programme that was devised for a lady called Irina Tweedie .
In order to see the progression you use Irina Tweedie as the source and then follow the observations in order and chart her progress. Irina Tweedie’s master was Bhai Sahib. I have also included a description of him.
In Sufi teaching there are 4 stages of annihilation.
- The first stage is annihilation in 'the Master' [the guru as Higher spirit]. The Master [Higher spirit and guru] then determines whether the Union is perfected
- The next stage is annihilation in the 'Teacher's Master', the 'spiritual influence of the original founder of the Path, or System to which they belong' - in effect the Intelligence looking after your Higher spirit. “In time the consciousness of the disciple becomes so absorbed in this great Master as to possess all his spiritual powers
- The next stage is 'annihilation in the prophet'. But by this is not meant Mohammed but the 'First Intelligence'
- Finally there is Union with the Ultimate Intelligence – Truth. But this stage is 'beyond all telling' and the Sufi says 'from him who has made the journey, no news returns

From time to time I had to close my eyes. It was interesting how the feeling of nothingness seems to increase as the time goes on …...... the great nearness to him, like a secret complicity of which nobody knows. I want to be nothing. The greatest bliss is in Nothingness.

Deepest peace. And I nearly fall down when I salute him lately. And the feeling of nothingness before him represents such happiness. He will be resting, his eyes closed or open; and I sit, bent in two (a comfortable position for me in his presence) under the blow from the two fans; he and I alone somewhere, where nothing is but peace. Lately it becomes increasingly lovely. Deep happiness welling from within. From the deepest depth.. also at home, when I think of him, it comes over me..... soft, gentle. A bliss of non-being; not existing at all. It is difficult to believe, unless one has experienced it, that it is so glorious 'not to be'.

There has been nothing much to write in recent weeks. I go there, sit immersed in Nothingness. And this evening he was in a very deep state. How the Divinity shines through his frail human form when he is in samadhi.........
