Background

Tyaga is one of the few techniques on this website that includes or needs the intervention of a Guru  for the simple reason that this technique could only have been devised and executed by a guru.  It is thus of double interest because it shows how gurus help their disciples and also something of the role of a guru on the spiritual path.

A guru act like a personal trainer, devising a specific series of steps, exercises and 'events' suited to the capabilities, evolution and character of the person concerned.  For this reason there is no real 'method' that a guru follows, every method is different, - tailor made - however, I think it helps to show how a guru can ‘help’, thus in order to do so I have used an example programme that was devised for a lady called Irina Tweedie  .

In order to see the progression you use Irina Tweedie as the source and then follow the observations in order and chart her progress.  Irina Tweedie’s master was Bhai Sahib.  I have also included a description of him.

It may help to know that when the parasympathetic system kicks in in a major way, one becomes very very sexually active both mentally and physically.  In Irina's case she had clearly never experienced this level of sexuality before and her upbringing appears to have been quite strait laced, so she viewed this as 'bad'.   It may also help to know that any demons you see are always your own, your subconscious can harbour some extraordinary things sometimes.

A description of the experience

The Chasm of Fire – Irina Tweedie

Last night was unbearable.  Beyond myself with desire, half unconscious, I suddenly noticed in the dark room around me, some kind of whirling, dark grey mist.  Trying to focus on it, I detected that there were strange shapes moving about and soon I could distinguish most hideous things, or beings; leering, obscene, all coupled in sexual intercourse, elemental creatures, animal like, performing wild sexual orgies.  I was sure that I was going mad.  Cold terror gripped me; hallucinations, madness; no hope for me – insanity – this was the end.  I buried my face into the pillow not to see; perhaps it will go, will vanish, but the aroused desire in me forced me to look.  I did not even know, not in this life at least, that such disgusting practises are possible; with dogs, men, women and horses, the most ghastly spider like creatures moving around, all leering at me, dancing grey shadows.  Things I never knew could be done, or could exist; the most lecherous filth, I had to witness that night.  Never knew?  If I did not know it, how could I see it?  It must have been somewhere in the depths, or else how, how could I see it.  It must have been in me.

The next morning she goes to Bhai Sahib 'weak and full of shame'..........

The Chasm of Fire – Irina Tweedie

'And how are you?  Any trouble?'
'Plenty!  I try to cope with it.  I think that I will not go mad after all'
'No, no danger of that' he said and his face was still.  'No, I am here'
My heart went out to him.  I was in good hands; there is no need to fear
'Is there any fire without smoke?' he asked in the afternoon.  He sat in the big chair, the light of the sunset though the open door on his face.
'No' I said
'And what is smoke?'
'The impurities which are expelled because they cannot be consumed by the fire'
'Correct' he nodded briefly
