Steiner, Rudolf - Nature spirits - Architecture, design, function and form

Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
Steiner recognised both the existence of and the importance of balancing the feminine and the masculine aspects of our minds - something of especial importance in architecture or any discipline that marries art and engineering.
Perhaps what is fascinating about this quote is that Robert Pirsig whose tragic treatment with ECT is provided in the ‘illness’ section had been desperately trying to get this same idea across to his professors in the university in which he worked in the 1950s and 60s, but neither he nor his professors appeared to have been aware of Steiner’s work – or for that matter the work of most of the people on this website. Pirsig’s book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance describes this need. What is perhaps tragic is that if Pirsig had known about Steiner and the many others who had already ‘solved’ and stated this problem, he might not have gone on to have a nervous breakdown.
A description of the experience
Rudolf Steiner – Nature Spirits
I still have a vivid recollection of a rectorial address given about 25 years ago by a well known architect. He spoke about style in architecture and uttered the remarkable sentence 'architectural styles are not invented, they grow out of spiritual life'.....
The unity of form and function should be expressed in all artefacts – there is the need to see the function of an object expressed in its form…..
…..just as in the Middle ages every lock on a door expressed what man's soul understood of outer forms ...some day people will understand how to build a railway station so that it streams out truth like a temple and is in fact simply an expression suited to what is within it.
