Mutwa, Vusamazulu Credo - Birds as creators

Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

The fact that birds can sing has placed them in a very special position in the symbolism of many cultures. Song and the Word are related, a person that can sing the songs of the universe is a creator, a magician or a person who knows ‘spells’. Thus birds are symbolically associated with creation, the ability to create and co-creation.

This is an extract from a Zulu legend – the Four Winds of the Goddesses. In most legends, birds create software by singing – in other words they sing songs and since the song is the musical version of the program, they are acting like the programmers of the universe . Here however, birds are flying to create a system – the system of the winds.

A description of the experience

Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa – Zulu Shaman [Dreams, Prophecies and Mysteries]

But then an astonishing thing happened, for the birds of the world – all the eagles and hawks and all the vultures and ospreys, all the sparrows and the many nameless songbirds – came together and made a great prayer by flying across the sky with their many thousands and millions of wings. And as they prayed, flying back and forth and then in circles, they created, with the motion of their wings, four great winds.
