Background

A description of the experience

Opium – the Diary of his cure – Jean Cocteau

One can say; the sun is big, this bit of dust is small, because they depend on our scale of values.  It is foolish to say; God is big, an atom is small.  It is very strange that hardly anyone lives with any feeling for the centuries which pass between each breath we take, of the worlds created and destroyed by our body, that the idea of our body's darkness conceals the fires which inhabit it, and that a difference in measurement renders incomprehensible the fact that these worlds may be civilised or dead; in brief, that the infinitely small may be a discovery instead of being an instinct.

It is the same for the infinitely big – big, but small by comparison with us – since we do not feel that our sky, our light, our space, constitute no more than a dark spot for the being whose body contains us and whose life – short for him – takes up centuries for us.

In spite of faith, God would sicken us.  The wisdom of Moses was to confine men to their tiny houses
