The last sphinx in captivity
Was a disappointing beast
Hardly worthy of the name –
With its unwholesome pelt
Like a doubtful
Jumble-sale bargain,
And wincing, bloodshot eyes.
All the same,
It was a genuine sphinx
And, once you’d tracked it
To its cage,
could still offer you,
If not some great
Poetic riddle to solve,
Then at least
A few fairly flabbergasting lies.
