I used to pass the time away by indulging in a form of self hypnosis.  While I was in this state I was oblivious of cold or time or hunger.  One day while I was doing this I found that I was looking down at myself lying in the bed with my eyes open and perfectly relaxed.  On another occasion I experienced the same thing but I not only looked at myself but also looked out of the cell window and recognised the German guard on duty outside.

Note when this subjects was next taken out for exercise, he was able to confirm that this particular guard was in fact on duty.  The subject comments that the window of his cell was ten feet from the ground and set in a wall three feet thick
