Background

A description of the experience

Wisdom, Madness and Folly - John Custance

The association of God with the sun is of course an ancient image, and the strength with which it forces itself upon my consciousness might seem to bear out Jung's theories of a "Collective Unconscious". The moon has almost equally powerful associations, but here there is a strong suggestion that a female power is involved, which generally appears to me as Diana, Goddess of the Ephesians, or Ashtaroth, consort of Baal. In the state of consciousness I am trying to describe it seems quite plain that there is no ultimate antagonism between the Christian God and heathen gods and goddesses, all of whom seem vividly real to me.
