Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
The classification under unnamed explorer is not correct, as we do know who wrote this, but I was not able to find out much more about him, other than what is mentionned in his book, which is more about the adventure than him.
In 1913, William Laird McKinley was on the research ship Karluk the lead vessel in the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913-18. The ship was trapped by the ice. On October 5th 1913, the storms abated and McKinley was able to go outside. He sat alone, but watched a spectacular display of the northern lights………
This may have been his Higher spirit, as such it may have been ecstasy, or it may have been a spirit helper
A description of the experience
William Laird McKinley – The Last Voyage of the Karluk
All at once I became aware of something new and strange, a consciousness of a presence, a feeling that I was not alone. Feeling is not the word to describe it; there was nothing of the senses in it at all, only an awareness. H G Wells wrote that at times in the night and in rare lonely moments ‘I experience a sort of communion of myself with something great that is not myself’. Perhaps I was sharing a similar experience; I don’t know. It passed.
