Background
Hallucination because the image was superimposed; inter composer communication because the Boy was communicating with Mr Patmore and using his perceptions to firstly see the events with the lady he met and then to 'summon' Patmore's image; and because the image did more than just be an image and actually interacted, inter composer communication with the disembodied soul as well.
He had a particularly good rapport with Mr Patmore,who was sympathetic to his abilities; this would have made both of them more open to composer communication. Both events are highly charged emotionally as such more accessible perception wise.
Incidentally the language used is just like my Mum used to use, she was always saying 'well I'm jiggered!' when she was surprised and 'what the Dickens' as another expression of surprise. She also said 'drat' or 'blow' or 'fuff' . As neither of my parents swore, this was the very mild non swearing equivalent of annoyance. 'Double fuff' was considerable annoyance!
A description of the experience
The Boy who saw True - February 18th
To-day we had geography just before Janet turned up with the milk and biscuits, and we'd been looking at the map of Canada, and Mr. Patmore told me he'd been there once. I don't know why but I was in one of my knowing moods this morning, so while he was drinking his milk I said,
"You won't be cross if I tell you something?" And he promised he wouldn't.
So I said, " When you were on that big boat going to Canada, you got sweet on a young lady, didn't you? And thought you'd like her for your Mrs. But after you got to Canada and you didn't see her for a bit, when you did see her again, you got sort of disappointed, and thought you wouldn't fancy her as your Mrs. after all”.
And Mr. Patmore looked mighty surprised and said, " Well, I'm jiggered. How the Dickens did you know that? I'd almost forgotten about it myself."
So I said I didn't know how I knew, but that it just comes to me. And he seemed as if he couldn't get over it, and said, " Well, that's most extraordinary. I've never believed in second sight, but I think you must have it. Can you tell me any more?"
And I was just going to say no, when I saw (the spirit of) a rum looking man in a great big hat, and he said, " Ask him if he remembers Sam North, and the scrape we got into that day."
So I asked him, and he seemed still more surprised, and said, " Don't I remember him indeed. He was one of the best fellows I ever met and what's more, he saved my life that day."
"Well," I said, " there he is now. Can't you see him?"
" Go on with you," he said, half laughing, "of course I can't see him. I only wish I could." This seemed to please Mr Sam North so much that he pulled a jolly face and said “Tell him he’ll see me all right when he gets over here”.
Drat it all I have to go to bed.
