The shepherd
Adapted from a poem by Heinrich Heine
My dearest love, I was assigned
To be your shepherd true and kind
And amid this ugly world and rude
To shelter you as best I could
I’ll give you food, to have your fill
I’ll bring you beer and wine until
Your troubles melt far far away
And in my arms you’ll beg to stay
And through the raging winter storm
Safe in my bosom I’ll keep you warm
I’ll hold you close in strong embrace
And gently kiss your hands and face
And when through night the torrents pour
And dogs and criminals they roar
Don’t tremble, darling, have no fear
Even when the lightning’s mighty spear
Cracks all the buildings – on my breast
I’ll let you sleep and calmly rest
And when I’m away and faint your heart
When I can no longer play my part
I’ll ask the angels to take over
Take the shepherd’s crook once more
Oh angels guard him day by day
From every harm, shield him I pray,
His body from hurt which will bring him pain
His mind from distress and fear again
And on his table, all that’s good
Strong wine, good beer and healthy food
And let him calmly sleep and rest
As once he slept upon my breast
