Background

A description of the experience

Purification is one of the key stages of the spiritual path, and without going through this stage many mystic and healing acts are not possible.  The colour white is used extensively in the clothes of the shaman and is also used extensively used in rituals, to express purity. The purification of the body is ritually signified, for example, by burning white paper – the concept of having been through ‘fire’.

Purity is regarded as essential for a Kut, and mystic shamanism in general, - purity of both the body and the mind. ‘It makes genuine and efficacious the communion of people and ancestors’. Ritual purification of the altar takes place before the start of the kut, and again as part of the first gori through fire and water.
