Background

A description of the experience

Edgar Cayce – Joseph Millard

He was out tramping the woods one day when he heard a distant shout, "Edgar! Edgar Cayce!"

A few moments later, Layne came running through the woods, waving a telegram. "Edgar, I just got a wire from a man in Chicago who heard about you and wants an immediate reading on his wife. She's in the hospital in very bad shape. He says it's urgent. Can you come back to town with me and give it this afternoon?"

"If it's that urgent," Edgar said, unbuttoning his collar, "we can't take time to go back to town. I'll give the reading right here."

He loosened his shoelaces, lay back on the frosty ground, and folded his hands over his solar plexus. In a few moments, he was asleep. Layne read off the woman's name and location in the Chicago hospital, but before he could finish the initial suggestion, Edgar began to twitch violently.

"Wait," he shouted. "We have the body, and it is in very bad condition. An operation performed a few days ago has just opened up. The body is haemorrhaging internally. Unless this bleeding is halted at once, there is no hope of survival."

Layne barked the command to awaken, then started to run.

Over his shoulder he yelled, "I'm going to phone the hospital long distance. Come along when you're ready."

Edgar hurriedly retied his shoelaces and set out for town. He had no idea what he had said during his sleep, but it was obviously a matter of great urgency.

Layne was just hanging up the telephone when Edgar got to the office. Layne's face was grey, his eyes dull. "You said the woman was bleeding to death internally. I got through to the hospital as fast as I could, but it wasn't fast enough. The doctor said she died five minutes ago - from an internal haemorrhage."

The tragic death of the unknown woman upset Edgar badly.
