Background

A description of the experience

As described in Illustrations Of The Influence Of The Mind Upon The Body In Health And Disease, Designed To Elucidate The Action Of The Imagination - Daniel Hack Tuke, M.D., M.R.C.P.,

PART II. THE EMOTIONS.
CHAPTER XI. INFLUENCE OF THE EMOTIONS UPON THE ORGANIC OR VEGETATIVE FUNCTIONS (CONTINUED).

Dr. Carpenter remarks that it is " perhaps not an ill-founded opinion that melancholy and jealousy have a tendency to increase the quantity, and to vitiate the quality of the biliary fluid," and that "it is certain the indulgence of these feelings produces a decidedly morbific effect by disordering the digestive processes, and thus reacts upon the nervous system by impairing its healthy nutrition" (Human Physiology. By Dr. Carpenter. 4th Edit. 1853, p. 982).
