Attempting to foresee an actual newspaper headline with an approximate date
The method I used for this was meditation. I would sit relaxed, clear my mind for a few minutes, and then wait for an image or words to come. I would generally fix a "target date" before I started the meditation, but this did not always stay so neatly in place. Since I regularly read The New York Times, I selected it as my "target paper."……
On December 17, 1969, l had a try at this technique, this time trying to zero in on January 2, 1970 . My Meditation imagery as sent to the CPR went like this:
"Bells in England and perhaps other foreign countries tolling for a funeral. A photo of a carriage being drawn by horses. . . . Someone was wearing a tall, black hat. . . . The New York Times will print a story early in the new year about the funeral of a great foreign dignitary, a man who was known around the world. On the front page a photo . . . a horse-drawn carriage.”
It was on December 22, however, that I seemed to find a close correspondence to this imagery in the Times. On the front page was a horse-drawn carriage driven by a man wearing a tall black hat. This had nothing to do with a funeral, but as I slid that page away from the paper to cut out the photo, I noticed showing through from the back sheet a photo with an obituary for Gen. Georges Catroux, who had joined General de Gaulle in England during World War II to form the Free French Forces.
So here my unconscious seemed to be telescoping unrelated images into a logical association. I had also-and this is very common indeed-exaggerated the importance of the event, thinking it might be someone like Harold Macmillan.
