Sonnet LXVII
There is no lower thing on earth than I
Conceive myself to be when I lack you.
My weak and tired spirit makes me sigh
For pardon for all things I've failed to do.
Stretch down to me, Oh God, that powerful chain
That knots all heavenly gifts. Such faith and trust
Are what I long forever to attain;
It is my fault I am not fully blest.
The more I think of faith, more rare and good
It seems, and even greater may it be
Since all the world depends on it for peace.
You never were a miser of your blood:
If Heaven is locked to every other key,
What kind of gifts of mercy, then, are these?
