Background
From 1876 to 1885 Böcklin was working in Florence, and there painted a Pietà, Ulysses and Calypso, Prometheus, and the Sacred Grove. By this time both grief and fear for the future had taken a hold and his paintings reflect this deep sense of unease.
The painting reflects mourning for something which has been lost almost irretrevably at this stage. A last homage to all that was divine before the flame flickers and dies.
