The Life of a Sensitive – Madame Michael Bouissou

The second ordeal happened one evening when I was working in a complete state of lucidity at my desk.

Although very different, it was highly disagreeable.

My desk, standing in front of a window, had its back to the room. It was about ten o'clock on the evening in question (not even the hour of crime) when I suddenly heard behind me light rhythmic shocks. On turning round, my surprise can be imagined at seeing a small occasional table on two feet rocking regularly from one to the other and thus making these little taps. As I watched it, with a very clear feeling that I was about to witness some misbehaviour on the part of this small piece of furniture I had known all my life, it suddenly gave a swift jump, flung itself at the divan, failed to climb onto it and after a few vain attempts, with a sort of grotesque and terrifying stagger, reached the door which opened onto the corridor.

Crossing this at great speed, it covered the whole width of another large room, only to come to a stop with such a violent crash in front of a closed door that I thought the table must have been smashed to pieces.

I would not have touched it for anything in the world I retired backwards into my room without taking my eyes for a second off this accursed table, and locking both the children's room and my own tried to fathom this astonishing phenomenon. When I was initiated I realised that the poor table was merely acting as an instrument, the real culprits being myself, my growing powers as a medium and my ignorance.
