Messing - "During the war Moscow remained the epicentre of governmental life, but society's cultural and scientific elite soon evacuated the city and settled in the countryside. The cream of the intelligentsia gathered in especially large numbers in Tashkent.
When I arrived at Tolstoy’s residence, the writer Kornei I. Chukovsky, the widow of Maxim Gorki, the famous actor Ivan N. Bersenev, and some unfamiliar musicians were already sitting over tea. Tolstoy's apartment was a meeting place for the elite, and there I performed an improvised session for the guests, by finding Tolstoy's missing watch and describing a cross that his wife was wearing underneath her dress.
Word of my arrival soon spread outside this close-knit little circle, and within three days my audience consisted of workers brought in from a Voronezh construction plant.
