The following letter in Afrikaans [is from] . Mrs. G. of Lydenburg describing her experience in this manner :
"Something most extraordinary happened to me in March 1961.
I was ill and had a high temperature and my heart was giving trouble at the same time. I was in bed and felt deeply depressed.
My thoughts were frightening-what would happen to my only little girl and my husband should I die? They needed me so much. I felt so ill that I really thought I would not live a few days longer. Anyway somehow I fell asleep. About three o'clock in the morning I woke and to my utter surprise I found myself gliding through our bedroom door. I was near the top of the door and at that moment looked back towards the bed and there was my exhausted body. It looked lifeless to me. I was about fifteen feet from where my husband was sleeping.
I thought that this was the end of my physical existence, and that death had brought a change for a new life. But at that moment I thought of my little daughter and how she would miss me. As these ideas about her went through my mind I suddenly felt a strange uncomfortable repercussive effect and there was I wide awake and back in my sick and painful body."
