Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

The rationale for why I have said the source is Robert Kirk is provided in the description for him.    The English or Scottish is as it is in the account only the 's' has been changed to be an 's', in the original it looks like an 'f'.  I have not used capital letters either - the entire text had each noun in capitals.

Andrew Lang added a comment to this entry saying that 'the ordinary spiritual poetry may be written as Dr Johnson said of Ossian, by anyone who would abandon his mind to it'

There are two options as far as I can see for the type of communication.  One is simple inter composer communication, in that someone with whom she had had contact had composed such a poem, and she was just reading their mind via a bridge.  The next is via pure inspiration, and I am more tempted to say it was simply pure inspiration, given the condescending note of Robert Kirk that 'nor was the maid capable to compose  it of herself', which is an indicator that she probably had never been give the chance to.

An extra option is that the poem was, again, already written and she was given access to spiritual data stores or database.

A description of the experience

The Secret Commonwealth - Robert Kirk 1691

..hereof I add but one instance more, of a very young maid, who lived near to my residence, that in one night learned a large piece of poesy, by the frequent repetition of it, from one of our nimble and courteous spirits, whereof a part was pious, the rest superstitious - for I have a copy of it - and no other person was ever heard to repeat it before, nor was the maid capable to compose  it of herself

The source of the experience

Kirk, the Reverend Robert
