The Empty Seat
On October 15, 1952, Professor Tenhaeff was preparing a chair test to be held four days later in Rotterdam. The professor picked chair Number 18.
“I see nothing," mumbled Croiset.
“Are you sure?"
"Absolutely."
This perplexed his parapsychological Boswell. Until then, Croiset had achieved near-perfect results.
Dr. Tenhaeff tried another number - Chair 3. Croiset smiled, saying quickly, "There will sit a woman. She has scars on her face. I see these scars have something to do with an automobile accident in Italy."
On the night of the meeting, it snowed in Rotterdam. Of the thirty persons invited to attend, one couldn't come. The empty chair? Number 18 - where Croiset said "I see nothing.”
But in Chair 3 sat a woman with a visible scar upon her face. "Why, yes," she admitted. "I was in an automobile accident in Italy two months ago. But tell me, how did you know?"
After the experiment, Tenhaeff corroborated Croiset’s image with testimony from the woman's husband, a neurologist.
