Mrs. W. Bezemer,--a deft, middle-aged woman who was one of Professor Tenhaeffs leading paragnosts before Croiset, has also solved many theft cases. Mrs. Bezemer, who moved from the- Hague to California several years ago, cracked the following important theft case:
On February 5, 1948, the Werkspoor Steelworks in Amsterdam, center of the diamond-cutting industry, reported the thievery of eighty-four grams of valuable platinum. Though management suspected two electricians, police investigation showed that they were innocent.
A detective consulted Mrs. Bezemer. As an inductor, she was handed the small box from which the platinum had been stolen. Her first impression was, "I see a man walking through the Central Station in Amsterdam holding a light-colored briefcase." Detectives checked this image, and found that it referred to the laboratory manager who, for security reasons, frequently took home the little box, carrying it in his light-colored briefcase to nearby Haarlem. The paragnost's image was correct, but her interpretation of it-thinking that the laboratory manager was the thief-was wrong.
Detectives returned to the paragnost. On her second try, she described a young man of twenty with fair hair, slight build, and small hands who worked at the laboratory. "This young man stole the platinum," the paragnost now emphasized. "He sold it to a dealer who lives somewhere in the Nieuwe Keizersgracht (New Imperial Canal) over a tailor's shop, next to some demolished premises."
Investigation disclosed that these astonishing particulars were not only parapsychologically correct but of practical police value. A young laboratory employee who fitted this description was interrogated. He quickly confessed having stolen the platinum and having sold it to the dealer who lived precisely where the sensitive had said. Police seized the stolen platinum at the dealer's dwelling.
