Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

In computer systems development, there is one other thing that can affect a plan – the external event.  So perhaps someone else sets up a competing business before us, or undercuts our prices, or a freak storm destroys our property, or we find that the suppliers let us down, or the customers don't pay.  Our 'business' is a like a little universe.  If all we had to worry about was that business – we were a self contained universe, then the plan would never need to change.  But our world is not like that, each business is buffeted by external events – and even strategic plans have to be altered if the external events are serious enough to affect the logic on which they were based.

But the universe, as far as we know, is self contained.  It is not buffeted by events.  The plan, the strategy and the objectives need never change.

We may think that the creation itself affects the plan, that we in a sense are a form of external event.  But we are not.  Little of what we do to each other or the resources on our planet affect this level of plan.  We could use up all the resources we use, and over breed until we became a pest.  But in the end, starvation, viruses, illness and deprivation would wipe most of us out and the balance would be restored.  The plan would not be affected.

A description of the experience

Pere Teilhard de Chardin – Phenomenon of Man

When we discussed the origin of the first cells, we considered that, if their spontaneous generation took place only once in the whole of time, it was apparently because the initial formation of the protoplasm was bound up with a state which the general chemistry of the earth passed through only once.  The earth should be regarded as the seat of a certain global and irreversible evolution, much more important for scientists to consider than any superficial oscillations

….................................

After that the phenomenon seemed to become lost in the multitude of ramifications, to the point we almost forgot it …..
