Nizami – Makhzanol Asrar (The Treasury of Mysteries) – extract from On the honour and dignity of this book 01

I, who am the singer of this new rose
am the melodious nightingale of thy garden.

I live on the road of thy love
I ring a bell down thy street

I have not accepted the words of any man
I have spoken what my heart has bidden me to say

I have created a new magic
I have made a figure from a new mould.

For a while I studied the science of polite learning
I embroidered the magic curtain of the dawn.

It holds the capital of poverty and of kingship
it holds the Treasury of the Divine Mysteries.

No fly has tainted its sugar; neither has its fly
tainted the sugar of any man………..

The style is wonderful, accept it.
It will not be strange, if thou shouldst favour it,

Because these words are not lit by external means,
like a lamp.

In this world, it is more prosperous than the world itself,
newer than the heaven,
yet born before it.

It takes no colour from any existing sign
it does not fit any existing tongue.

If it is savoury, partake of it; may it nourish thee
if not, mayest thou forget it
