The Yellow Emperor asked the Spirit of the Left, "Yin and yang, the nine openings of the body, and the twelve major points are all born together, but the genitals alone 'die' or lose their function first. Why is this?"

The Spirit of the Left said, "Because the genitals are not employed in doing work. They are not instrumental in emotion, they do not help in eating and drinking; their abode is very hidden and not exposed to the sun, they are hastily and roughly used, they do not wait for maturity and cannot endure the friction of intercourse-therefore they wear out early. We avoid their names and hide their members, we use them most without restraint and without propriety; therefore they are born with the body but lose their individual function first."
