Mircea Eliade

Near Yggdrasil [the tree of life in Norse myth] is the miraculous fountain of Mimir, where Odhin left one eye as a pledge and where he constantly returns to refresh and enrich his wisdom.  The fountain of Urd is also to be found near Yggdrasil; there the gods hold daily council and deliver justice.  The Norns water the giant tree with the water of the fountain to revive its youth and vigour.
