Romano himself was often unaware of the strength of his "ray." Even when the subject was blindfolded and had cotton in his ears, he immediately and correctly localized the cool sensation to various parts of his body, his right or left hand, forehead, cheek, chin, nose, ear, and so forth.

When an unsuspecting three-year-old girl was blindfolded and merely instructed to "sit still for a little game" (in a room that was 70" F.), she said, "It's cold in the kitchen, it's cold!" every time Romano applied his "ray" to parts of her face or hands.

On many occasions the "ray" transiently bent a candle flame, even when the candle was shielded with a glass chimney. This effect was more apparent and pronounced than when other people, presumably without such an emanation, tried to do the same thing. However, this simple test with the candle flame was vitiated because in the process of "radiating" Romano raised his hand to the area he was attempting to affect. Thus, it was difficult to separate the possible breeze caused by Romano's movement from the cooling sensation due to the "ray."

When an ordinary alcohol thermometer was used as a target for the "ray' there were no temperature changes. On other occasions, there was no discernible effect on an electroscope even though the subjective cooling effects were perceived.
