It is unclear whether Eleanor had schizophrenia or not - she heard voices, not all heard voices are caused by schizophrenia, which has a specific clinical meaning. There are numerous interpretations one could place on what happened to her.
One is that as a result of her abuse and heightened traumatic state her emotion was so high it attracted the attention of other bodied souls who were in the same high emotional state. The brain acts like a mobile phone in these circumstances, communication is via thought. Generally you are hearing other bodied souls. She is left handed so her right brain will be more active - the antenna to the spiritual Internet.
The only way to treat this unwanted attention is to recognise they need as much help as you - with help from someone not plagued by the problem to guide you in the words to use, you can then use the right level of sympathy and empathetic help to calm them, and by calming them, you help yourself.
An alternative explanation is split/multiple personality which is clinically not schizophrenia, but the personalities can act like fragmented parts and also need to be treated kindly. Shamans call this soul loss. Each traumatic event creates a new personality - so each event [sometimes buried] has to be identified and reintegration via kindness and compassion - love of yourself used.

Eleanor Longden: The voices in my head
To all appearances, Eleanor Longden was just like every other student, heading to college full of promise and without a care in the world. That was until the voices in her head started talking. Initially innocuous, these internal narrators became increasingly antagonistic and dictatorial, turning her life into a living nightmare. Diagnosed with schizophrenia, hospitalized, drugged, Longden was discarded by a system that didn't know how to help her. Longden tells the moving tale of her years-long journey back to mental health, and makes the case that it was through learning to listen to her voices that she was able to survive.
