Heat of the mystic
During a number of types of spiritual experience, it is possible to experience both heat and cold. This change of inner temperature may be a by-product, an effect in other words, without any deliberate intention on the part of the person to have produced this heat or cold. Here, there may even be quite prosaic physical reasons why it has occurred and it is referred to as 'inner heat' and 'inner cold' - See heat and cold.
But there are some people on the spiritual path who reach a stage where they deliberately invoke an inner heat. And this is known as the Heat of the Mystic. The method by which it is most frequently generated is a form of meditation coupled with controlled breathing, which is now known by various names - one of which is Tummo. The aim is twofold:
- the person uses the method to learn and practise how to control the process of directing energy flows with a view to more advanced kundalini type experiences. Because the generation of heat is so tangible, both the person and the person's teacher can see whether the process has been mastered or not
- the heat helps in getting the person fit enough to withstand the next round of experiences. Viruses do not like heat, nor do parasites or bacteria and sweating can release toxins, so the practise in essence gets rid of all the things which produce illness and disease. This latter process may take some time.
