Symbols - What does heaven look like

Eagle as symbol of the empire builder

The eagle -  because of its associations - has been grasped as a symbol of power by royalty, empires, and by those seeking to convey their power and apparent connection with the ‘creative force’.  To a large extent therefore its symbolism has been usurped and put to some unfortunate uses.

The eagle was the symbol of the mighty Roman Empire, of the Roman emperors such  as Caesar, as well as  mythological symbol  representing the Greek
god Zeus.  It appears frequently in the ancient Greek art, Hellenistic art, and Roman art.

It was the emblem of empires. The Holy Roman Empire, and as we can see above, the Egyptian empire and the Indonesian empire.

As we can see, an eagle person can be  royalty amongst men, with power and leadership and with the creative force.  He or she is the strategist, the strategic thinker with vision, clarity of thinking and seeing as well as foresight.  They are only interested in the big picture – detail and minutae are of no interest at all.  They are incisive quick thinkers, and quick to act in a decisive way and they use the big picture to do this.

An eagle person is also one who perceives himself to be on the spiritual path, they have chosen to fly to be with God and to immerse themselves in the fire of the Sun.  They seek union with the Creator spirit and are determined in that path.  An eagle person considers their life a battle to gain dominance of good over evil .  Furthermore they are characterised by their daring in their quest to dominate and destroy baser forces.

The eagle person – as the preminent hero figure  - thus signifies heroic nobility, someone able to fly higher than any other hero – a symbol of divine majesty – a future king or queen.

But on the negative side, the eagle person can be ruthless, utterly ruthless in their pursuit of what they believe is ‘right’.   And what they believe is ‘right’ may not be that at all.  They often have an arrogance and haughtiness that denies any authority except their own.

The eagle baby bird kills its sibling  if there is more than one egg in order to become the surviving bird.  An eagle person will symbolically do the same, to fellow workers, to family to friends – all are expendable in the pursuit of the rise to the top.  And they can also figuratively tear innocent victims limb from limb.  The beak – a symbol of both words and the power to destroy can do so via words or via actions.  And an eagle person does not hesitate to decimate smaller innocent and weaker victims whether they be countries,  rival businesses, rivals on the sports field, fellow worker or even family members  ….

An eagle person may also be deluded into thinking he has divine authority to do what he is doing.  That somehow he is ‘appointed by God’ that he is the Creator’s representative on earth, a situation that is clearly not the case -  as Jesus said the kingdom of God is open to the meek of heart and the pure in spirit – not the aggressive empire builders.

It is thus supremely ironic that a number of nations have chosen the eagle as their symbol.  It is almost as if they are advertising their intentions.  Mexico sees itself as crushing evil in the form of the snake, but all the other examples given have been ruthless empire builders.

Standard from a German Army Mercedes

In the example (left), the eagle's claws grasp a wreath of oak leaves surrounding a swastika, another key symbol of the Nazi regime.

This standard came from a German Army Mercedes half-track staff car captured on the Belgium-German border in late 1944. A soldier of The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) brought it back to Britain.

The coats of arms of a number of nations and former empires incorporate the eagle.

The emblem is often used by countries that have a long military history or have a history of the acquisition of territory and power by military might, or rule by military people.

Serbia's coat of arms incorporates
the crown, the shield, the fleur de
lys and the eagle – all symbols of
royalty, and so called ‘divine authority’.

The Eagle of the Holy Roman Empire displayed on its
wings the shields of the Houses that belonged to it.

And then we have the United States that incorporates the eagle in a huge number of its emblems to represent their belief that “we have been appointed by ‘God’ to be the upholders of ‘good’ against ‘evil’”
