Godparent

In Christianity, a godparent is someone who bears witness to a child's baptism, and tends to be an individual chosen by the parents to take an interest in the child's upbringing and personal development, and to take care of the child should anything happen to the parents. A male godparent is a godfather, and a female godparent is a godmother. The child is a godchild (i.e. godson for boys and goddaughter for girls).
But this is actually a corruption of the much earlier mystic and spiritual role of godparents, which is perhaps better seen in the myths of the fairy godmother.
When a child was seen to be destined for a very key role spiritually and had been chosen to start the spiritual path, the godparents were those who guided the child in the steps they followed, teaching them, advising them and helping them progress spiritually. All godparents by definition thus had to be adepts themselves and had to have passed all the stages of the initiation processes they taught.
The process is well explained in the Korean mystic system of which we have an observation, but it is inherent in the idea of the ‘guru’, and the Sufi masters.
It is an interesting facet of many of the systems that help may come telepathically. As Leonard Cohen says
Treaty - Leonard Cohen
I've seen you change the water into wine
I've seen you change it back to water too
I sit at your table every night
I try but I just don’t get high with you
I wish there was a treaty we could sign
I do not care who takes this bloody hill
I’m angry and I’m tired all the time
I wish there was a treaty
I wish there was a treaty
Between your love and mine
They’re dancing in the street, it’s Jubilee
We sold ourselves for love but now we’re free
I’m sorry for the ghost I made you be
Only one of us was real and that was me
