This book, which covers Visions and hallucinations, explains what causes them and summarises how many hallucinations have been caused by each event or activity. It also provides specific help with questions people have asked us, such as ‘Is my medication giving me hallucinations?’.

Spiritual concepts

The word chakra is Sanskrit for ‘wheel’.  The chakras are said to be ‘force centres’ or whorls of energy permeating from a point on the physical body, in ever increasing fan shaped formations.  They are thus rotating vortices of energy and more specifically spiritual input, although they are considered the focal points for both the reception and transmission of energies.

You cannot measure or see chakras with the naked eye, however, those blessed with the power to ‘see’ can perceive them and they are presented by the composer to people in the form of vortices each different in form, makeup, colour and frequency.  There are said to be “seven major chakras, twenty one minor chakras and over 700 minichakras on the body” that relate to acupuncture and major reflex points.  The seven major chakras have contact with the physical body as single acupoints.

Although most Eastern, Western and New Age authorities accept that there are seven major chakras, it is apparent that gifted individuals have been able to establish that there are two other chakras that do not have direct contact with the physical body.  They exist ‘above the Crown chakra’.

I have read that some people believe there are as many as nine major chakras and forty minor chakras.

The following descriptions are a good summary of what chakras are……

Barbara Brennan – Hands of Light

Each of the vortices exchanges energy with the Universal Energy Field.  Thus when we speak of feeling ‘open’ that is literally true.  All the major chakras, minor chakras, lesser chakras and acupuncture points are openings for energy to flow into and out of the aura.  We are like sponges in the energy sea around us.  ……..

Therefore we can see that staying open means … metabolising a lot of energy from the universal  field through all the chakras, large and small….

Healing with the Chakra Energy system – John Cross

The structure of a chakra differs from chakra to chakra and depends on the age of the person in question.  Its general shape can be likened to an inverted ice cream cone, with the narrow end ‘attached’ to the physical body.  The size of the chakra at the outer border of the emotional body is approximately 2 inches, at the outer border of the emotional body it is the size of a saucer, and at the outer border of the mental body it is the size of a small dinner plate.  Therefore it can easily be seen that at the subtler levels away from the body the various major chakras intermingle their energies.

The Base or Root chakra is said to deal with conceptual or ancestral energy and the Crown deals with our spiritual awareness.

In each chakra there are four or more components of rotating vortices that form smaller chakras and they seem to be cylindrical in shape.  It is these individual components that vibrate and resonate to a particular frequency.  The lower chakras resonate somewhat slowly, while the Brow and Crown chakras resonate at a phenomenal rate.  These differences can be felt with practise.

The Base chakra consists of four rotating vortices, the Sacral chakra has six, the Solar Plexus has ten, the Heart has twelve, the Throat has sixteen, the Brow has ninety six and the Crown has a staggering 972.  This is why the Crown chakra is called the thousand petalled lotus.  As well as being divided into four or more whirling spherical components, each chakra, it is said, has a central core with radiating segments rather like the cornea and iris in the eye.

Katha Upanishad

The pure eternal Spirit dwells in the castle of the eleven gates of the body.

Svetasvatara Upanishad

The wandering swan of the soul dwells in the castle of nine gates of the body and flies away to enjoy the outer world.  He is  the master of the universe; of all that moves and all that moves not.

Katha Upanishad

One hundred and one subtle ways come from the heart.  One of them rises to the crown of the head.  This is the way that leads to immortality; the others lead to different ends.

Healing with the Chakra Energy system – John Cross

In his book The Chakras first published in 1927, the Theosophist the Reverend C W Leadbetter placed the major chakras on the front of the body.  Tibetan and Sanskrit literature, on the other hand, places them on the spine.  Djwal Khul, a 14th century philosopher said they lay some three inches behind the spinal column.  David Tansley states that they are found on the anterior aspect, whereas Barbara Ann Brennan, in her book Hands of Light places them on the front and back…… My experience is similar to Brennan’s; each chakra has a dorsal and ventral aspect and the influence of the chakra girdles the body at that given level.

Healing with the Chakra Energy system – John Cross

As of this writing, there are no books that discuss the minor chakras in depth.  So far I have read just three books in which they are given a mention and two of them are based on David Tansley’s book.  Most of the positions that are given in that book are, in my opinion, incorrect.  I have undertaken several years' research as to their location and function and the information provided [in the book] is unique in its concept and practise.

If you don’t believe chakras exist, it is worth mentioning that I have seen a fairly convincing demonstration of how a crystal pendant can be ‘turned’ by the energy from chakra centres.
