Spiritual concepts

Humming and buzzing

Humming buzzing, whirring – single notes of various pitches sometimes amounting to almost a scream are a frequently heard sound in visions and hallucinations and especially out of body experiences.  One of the explanations is provided in the observations, which puts the ‘noise’ down to an increase in the energy being received through the chakras

They - aya [sic] is still not done with me. The buzzing carrier wave that has been with me all night comes to the forefront of my consciousness and seems to hook into something. When it does so, my thoughts speed up, to catch up with the wave

It is clear from reading the evidence of the observers I found, that this is not tinnitus.  In the first place the sound is more of a hum, and secondly it is only heard in certain places and certain states.  The closest sound frequently mentioned is the sound of a swarm of bees or a hive of bees, which is a gentle humming buzzing sound – not an angry or loud sound.  This is why bees have such an important role symbolically in poems and myth and why they feature so many times in paintings and pictures.  They have been included in the Tarot too.

The humming noise is usually quite gentle, but if you are schizophrenic or overdose on drugs the noise can be overwhelming, meaning you are on severe overload .  I will provide an example here rather than make it an observation ………

The Varieties of Psychedelic Experience – Dr Robert Masters and Dr Jean Houston  Case Study S Male student age 22 took LSD 'borrowed from his brother a physician, took a strong dose over 400 micrograms
I remembered a patient described by my brother.  He was schizophrenic, oblivious to circumstances and to his orientation in the world, he concerned himself only with considering what was going on in his head – a buzzing in his head as if it contained a nest of hornets.  Now, with all of the stimuli from the environment swarming in upon me, I also felt my internal state to be one of a vast and buzzing colony of bees.  Tingling vibratory feelings overwhelmed my nervous system and I felt myself lifted upward toward some unknown bliss or terror.
