Common steps and sub-activities

Turkish bath

A true Turkish bath (Turkish: hamam) is the Turkish equivalent of the Roman bath, steambath, sauna, or Russian banya.

The true Turkish bath, as opposed to the western variants, starts with a relaxation in a room (known as the warm room) that is heated by a continuous flow of warm moist air. Participants may then move to an even hotter steamier room (known as the hot room.   They may then receive a massage, then finally retire to the cooling-room for a period of relaxation.

Note that the Islamic hammam does not have a pool unless the water is flowing from a spring. So there is none of this bracing plunge into a cold bath so beloved of westerners.  In the Islamic hammams the bathers splash themselves with cold water – mainly to generate more steam.
