Keightley, Thomas

Category: Scientist

Thomas Keightley (1789 – 1872) was a historian, educated at Trinity College, Dublin, who wrote works on mythology and folklore.   He wrote a number of extremely useful and well researched books on the ‘terrestrial hierarchies’  - that is fairies, dwarfs, elves and so on and was an authority on many ancient myths and legends.  He was particularly interested in how folk tales spread from country to country and also how similar tales and legends were to be found around the world in countries which had no cultural contact.  Thus I have used his work as the basis for collecting myths, legends and explanations of this area.

  • The Fairy Mythology 1870 -  available online by Sacred Texts.
  • Fairy Mythology (1850, 1870), The World Guide to Gnomes, Fairies, Elves, and Other Little People

Among his other books are:

  • Mythology of Ancient Greece and Italy
  • Popular Tales and their transmission from one country to another
  • History of Greece written at the request of Dr Thomas Arnold of Rugby, this is a series of text-books on English, Greek, and other histories. It was translated into modern Greek.
