SRIs
A serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI) is according to Wikipedia:
a type of drug which acts as a reuptake inhibitor of the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)) by blocking the action of the serotonin transporter (SERT). This in turn leads to increased extracellular concentrations of serotonin and, therefore, an increase in serotonergic neurotransmission.
They can be selective and non selective.
The selective SRIs are described under the heading of anti-depressants, since this is the purpose most of them serve, they are then called SSRIs.
The non selective SRIs include both legal and illegal drugs. As these drugs are grouped under the purpose they serve.
- Pain killers and NSAIDs such as – Bicifadine, Nefopam
- Anti-depressants such as Desvenlafaxine, Fetzima, Venlafaxine (brand name: Effexor), Dasotraline, Amitifadine, Etoperidone, Nefazodone, Tofenacin, Trazodone, Vilazodone, Vortioxetine
- Anti-anxiety drugs such as Cymbalta
- Fibromyalgia drugs such as Milnacipran
- Obesity drugs – such as Sibutramine, Tesofensine
- Alcoholism treatments – such as the trial drug DOV-102677
- Antihistamines - such as brompheniramine, chlorphenamine, dimenhydrinate, diphenhydramine, mepyramine (pyrilamine), pheniramine, tripelennamine
- Anaesthetics – such as Ketamine
- Muscle relaxants – such as Cyclobenzaprine (brand name Flexeril)
- Cough medicines - such as Dextrorphan (DXO) and DXM – Dextromethorphan
- Anti-virals – such as Efavirenz
- Anti-psychotics – such as Loxapine [used in the treatment of schizophrenia], Resrpine and Ziprasidone (marketed as Geodon, Zeldox)
- Abortifacients – ie drugs to induce abortions such as Mifepristone
- Opioid analgesics – such as dextropropoxyphene, and pethidine (meperidine)
- Methadone
- Cocaine
- Anti-arrhythmia drugs – such as Amiodarone (used for various types of cardiac dysrhythmias, both ventricular and atrial).
- Amphetamines – such as amphetamine, methamphetamine, MDMA)
- Ibogaine - which is is metabolized in the human body by cytochrome P450 2D6 into noribogaine (12-hydroxyibogamine). Noribogaine is a potent SRI.
- Smoking cessation aids such as Lobeline
- Narcolepsy treatments - such as GHB/Xyrem
- Appetite suppressants - such as Sibutramine
