Overload

Losing your independence

Category: Events

Type

Involuntary and voluntary

Introduction and description

Losing your freedom and your independence, perhaps because you have been jailed or made financially dependent on someone else, or because you are forced to work for someone or a company you don’t want to has an effect on the ego.  Basically it erodes it and erodes it very successfully.  You feel like an unimportant worm, a slave with no rights and no real identity.

Background

This approach is generally one used by gurus and ‘masters’ with their disciples. The aim is to defeat the ego, by reducing it to a form of total dependence on the ‘master’.  It is thus a direct attack on the Will and the Ego – no beating about the bush with emotions and desires, this goes straight to the heart of the block between you and your composer.

There are a number of ways in which the freedom of a disciple can be subtly removed and their independence.  The first and most obvious is to take away their monetary support making them accept an allowance and then perhaps depriving them of the allowance periodically.  If it creates suffering all the better, the lesson is that bit harder and the impact on the will that bit more intense.

There are also other subtle ways in which dependence can be created.  By using your beliefs – for example a belief in karma – and then establishing what your fears are concerning these beliefs, the guru can imply that the removal of those threats are in his hands and his hands only, that only he is able to take the threats away.

After a while the level of dependence so created places the person in a position where they can feel not trapped, but totally unable to go anywhere but forward with their guru in the direction the guru dictates, the will is starting to be eroded...

Jesus used this approach, a number of sects use this approach and the Sufi master Bhai Sahib used this approach with Irina Tweedie

I asked if I could speak to him alone.  He nodded.  I told him that I had taken out all the money from my account as I understood that he wants me to give it away... later I said that it is frightening that all my money should go.
'What will become of me?'
'If you are afraid, keep it' he shrugged 'I don't want it for myself at any rate'.

I had fasted for two days.  No food at all.  When I went to him, I had palpitations and pain in my heart, probably brought on by the emptiness in the bowels due to the empty stomach.  He had not been to the bank, said that an employee of the bank will bring some money.  I doubted it.  His expression was severe, hardly looking at me, speaking abruptly. He looked remote and ruthless; his face was like a stone.  In my heart there is much fear when he is in this mood.
He stood at the gate waiting for the bank employee to arrive.  And I went home to take some medicine to stop the palpitations.  When I came back, he was talking to two young men at the gate.  They were from the bank, he later told me.  The money arrived.  I was relieved.
I did not expect to get such a reaction after only a short fast.  He said that he will give me some money for food tomorrow.

'Do not insist; it is as I say.  You believe in karma.  When you are on the path earnestly and seriously, your karmas are taken away from you.  Either you have to suffer them, as I already told you the other day, in your physical life, or they will come to you in dreams.  One second of dream suffering is like 3 years of real suffering in life.
When you are on the path you are speeded up and pay for it in your dreams.
If you stay away from the path, once decided, all the karmas you will pay for in full in your daily life.  But once on the path, the grace of God reaches you, catches up with you and the mental karma will go away in dreams.  Emotional sufferings are cleared up by the suffering love causes, but the physical karmas one has to suffer in the physical body.
We are not supposed to have another one, if we are with the Teacher.

The Chasm of Fire – Irina Tweedie
What a difference there was between that world which had been mine not so long ago and the world of the Master – obscure, disturbing, still unknown to me, a dark terra incognita, full of enigmas, disquieting mystery and God knows what secret suffering.
This was my world from now on.  I myself have chosen it.  More than ever before, the life of the world as I knew it seemed empty, devoid of all meaning and I understood why, once on the spiritual path, one can never go back; not because there are such secrets which cannot be revealed, but simply because there remains nothing to go back to.

The guru  - and it has to be a guru or master that does this  - reduces you to a dependent child.  The method used depends a lot on you and your personality.

How it works

You need to have the Model of the Mind open and have read How spiritual experence works.

This level of dependence can produce a considerable amount of fear in the person used to their own independence.  Thus one means by which this works is via the Overwhelming fear and  terror it provokes.

Loss of independence means THREAT.  Any form of reminder of the amount of the loss being suffered – a sudden jog to the memory which then produces memories,  - simply adds to the emotion and the subconscious feels the terror of this new threat.

There is also the direct attack upon the personality, so direct it is subdued fairly effectively.

Thus the intensity of emotion blots everything else out – absolutely everything – reason, logic, desires and objectives, obligations and opportunities.   Nothing is left except the vast sea of distress.

And the Will is overwhelmed.  It can do nothing against such an onslaught, it has nothing in its armoury to help – no learnt function can match this barrage.

So the Will gives in and the Composer takes over.
