Introduction and description

Antifungal drugs are pharmaceuticals used to treat mycoses – fungal infections. We urge you to read the sections on fungal infections and that on Candidiasis as they provide important information about the causes of these infections and how they can be prevented.

The healing observations provide details of treatments that actually cure fungal infections.  The drugs in this category generally tend to deal with the symptoms and not the cause of the infection.

Types and examples

Depending on the nature of the infection, a topical or systemic agent may be used. In effect, the pharmaceutical may be applied to the skin, ingested or even injected into a vein.  Other therapies exist for treating fungal infections, but are not classed within this class of drugs.  The class covers a wide range of drugs with different mechanisms of action, as such it is easier to look at each drug to understand how it is theoretically supposed to work.

An example of an antifungal is fluconazole, or Diflucan, which is the basis of many over-the-counter antifungal treatments. Another example is amphotericin B (the A form being toxic) which is more potent. It is used in the treatment of the most severe fungal infections that show resistance to other forms of treatment and it is administered intravenously

Drugs to treat skin infections are Tolnaftate (Tinactin), an over the counter topical; Ketoconazole, especially used to treat tinea versicolor and other dermatophytes; Itraconazole; Terbinafine (Lamisil); Echinocandins (caspofungin); Griseofulvin, commonly used for infections involving the scalp and nails.

Yeast infections in the vagina, caused by candida albicans, are treated with medicated suppositories such as tioconazole and pessaries whereas skin yeast infections are treated with medicated ointments.

And they have caused spiritual experiences – principally hallucinations.

Side effects

In June 2016, eHealthme ceased to provide the information on which all the data in this section is based.  On querying my friends in the USA, it would seem that many of the sites that provided similar information, have done the same.  The links we provided to eHealthme also no longer work as this data too has been removed. 

As to why all these sites have removed exceptionally important information, my USA helpers said that more and more people are questioning what they are being given – and demanding to know WHY the CAUSE of their illness has not been investigated.  It appears that there has been a very heartening increase in the numbers of people who want to be healed – have the cause tackled and not the symptoms.  And this is ‘not popular’ with the conventional medical community, who cannot make money from well people.

The statistics collected from eHealthme remain valid for the date they were collected.  As such we have left this section as it is – an historical record.  Please read this section therefore only as an historical record of the figures that were applicable on the date specified.

Applied on the skin, the side effects of many anti-fungals are mild.  But the spiritual experiences and the adverse reactions of this class of pharmaceuticals appear to be all caused by ingestion and injection.  And the side effects are indeed severe.  Many side effects and adverse drug reactions have been reported with all these drugs "possibly due to their extensive biodistribution and the often extended durations involved in anti-fungal treatment":

  • Stomach disease and Intestine disease - Gastrointestinal Problems -  Diarrhea, constipation, nausea, sickness, fullness, abdominal pain, indigestion, dyspepsia, gastritis, cholestasis, flatulence, altered stool colour, abdominal muscular pain.
  • Central Nervous System / Neurological Problems Headaches, dizziness, vertigo, light-headedness, decreased concentration levels, paraesthesia (pins and needles)
  • Liver problems - Hepatic Problems Raised liver enzymes, liver inflammation (hepatitis), liver damage, liver failure
  • Immune System Problems  - Decreased white blood cell counts including pancytopenia, leukopenia, lymphopenia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, and neutropenia. Auto-immune reactions such as lupus erythematosus
  •  Psychological Problems Depression, anxiety, insomnia, increased / unusual dream activity, malaise.
  •  Sensory Problems Complete loss of taste (ageusia), decreased taste (hypogeusia) and distorted taste (dysgeusia) often involving a metallic taste sensation and dry mouth.
  •  Visual disturbances including hallucinations,  blurred vision, green vision and double vision.
  •  Skin Problems -  Rash, hives. (urticaria), skin irritation, itching (pruritis), jaundice, Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
  • Nephrotoxicity (kidney damage) is a frequently reported side effect, and can be severe and/or irreversible.
  • Electrolyte imbalances (e.g. hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia) may also result.
  • Blood system - In the circulatory system, several forms of anemia and other blood dyscrasias (leukopenia, thrombopenia)
  • Heart failure -  serious cardiac arrhythmias (including ventricular fibrillation), and even cardiac failure have been reported. Also hypotension and hypertension.
  • Fever and hyperthemia - shaking, chills, high fever
  • Cancer - some antifungals are phototoxic and have  been associated with an increased risk of squamous-cell carcinoma of the skin.

 Deaths

Using the Adverse Drug Reports from eHealthme submitted by doctors to the FDA and SEDA in the USA only [thus excluding the rest of the world], the following figures for deaths from these drugs were correct as at March 2016:

 Amphotericin b  and its trade names

  • On Mar, 11, 2016: 4,958 people reported to have side effects when taking Amphotericin b. Among them, 101 people (2.04%) have Death
  • On Apr, 1, 2016: 2,318 people reported to have side effects when taking Fungizone. Among them, 22 people (0.95%) have Death

Diflucan and other trade names

  • On Mar, 3, 2016: 17,157 people reported to have side effects when taking Diflucan. Among them, 293 people (1.71%) have Death
  • On Mar, 31, 2016: 19,847 people reported to have side effects when taking Fluconazole. Among them, 467 people (2.35%) have Death

Lamisil and its trade names

  • On Mar, 29, 2016: 6,902 people reported to have side effects when taking Lamisil. Among them, 39 people (0.57%) have Death
  •  On Mar, 21, 2016: 495 people reported to have side effects when taking Terbinafine hydrochloride. Among them, 1 people (0.20%) has Death

  • On Apr, 1, 2016: 1,492 people reported to have side effects when taking Mycelex. Among them, 55 people (3.69%) have Death

How it works

Given the number of side effects, the most obvious thing to say would be that they work to give you a spiritual experience via one of these illnesses, but ultimately it might be better to say antifungals give you a spiritual experience because they are toxins, or if you prefer poisons.
