Overload

Mineral supplements

Category: Food

Type

Involuntary and voluntary

Introduction and description

Mineral supplements usually contain one or more of the following minerals in pill formulations:

The Chemical elements needed by the human body but not included in supplements because they are freely available in salt and food are sulphur, sodium, and chloride.

Some supplements also contain the "trace" or minor dietary elements, cobalt, coppermolybdenum, iodide, manganese, chromium, and selenium.

In general, the pills are not supplied as pure minerals, they are often sold in the form of a mixture of substances all promoted as 'health giving'. For example one 'selenium' supplement on the UK market also contains ALA, vitamin C, vitamin E and broccoli powder!

Some supplements also far exceed the recommended daily amount for both vitamins and minerals, sometimes by as much as three or four times. Given that a person on a normal diet obtains many of these minerals in their food anyway, mineral supplements have the potential to expose a person to severe overdose – severe mineral imbalance.

Some people with damaged organs – particularly the liver, intestines and kidneys need supplementation because their ability to absorb the mineral they need is impaired.

Those who have undergone Gastric by pass surgery, for example, frequently need supplements of all sorts to keep them alive. But for those without damage, mineral supplements represent a risk of overdose and interestingly enough deficiency.

A person who is 'slimming' or trying to maintain a low weight and size zero figure may take mineral supplements and vitamin supplements in the mistaken belief that they are calorie free and give them the nutrients they need. But they might be wrong.

A 1998 review concluded that zinc oxide, for example, one of the most common supplements in the United States, and zinc carbonate are nearly insoluble and poorly absorbed in the body. This review cited studies which found low plasma zinc concentrations after zinc oxide and zinc carbonate were consumed. Zinc deficiency is a really severe illness.

The same review found, however, that “harmful excessive supplementation is a problem among the relatively affluent”.

The reason why these relatively affluent people take mineral supplements is not always because they think they are mineral deficient. Zinc, for example, is included in most single tablet over-the-counter daily vitamin and mineral supplements and preparations include zinc oxide, zinc acetate, and zinc gluconate. These tablets are often sold on the basis that they are “believed to possess antioxidant properties, which may protect against accelerated aging of the skin and muscles of the body”, as Wikipedia says “studies differ as to their effectiveness”.

There may be those who eat fortified cereals also in the mistaken belief they are getting enough zinc or other minerals. Fortified cereals being a form of mineral supplementation. A 2005 study, however, found that various compounds of zinc, including oxide and sulfate, did not show statistically significant differences in absorption when added as fortificants to maize tortillas.

The best source of all minerals for those without organ damage is foods, as the food itself helps in ensuring there is balance.

How it works

Mineral supplements provide the opportunity fo you to overdose on a mineral.  Because mineral balance is so finely tuned - with the 'golden triangle' of copper, zinc and iron for example, and the links between calcium and the other minerals that control the nervous system, any form of overdose has the potential to put our entire system out of kilter and make us really ill.

As I have emphasised a number of times it is important to know if you are deficient in these minerals first before you do anything, and if you are deficient the first line of activity is via the diet - Eating for health

Pharmaceuticals have the potential to completely imbalance our system and in this case if we insist [or our doctors insist] that we keep on taking a pharmaceutical then mineral supplements may indeed be needed, but it really needs to be a controlled dose based on measured deficiency.  The same is true if you have had gastric by-pass surgery or have experienced any other traumatic organ damage.  Measure first, adminster precisely later.

If we simply take mineral supplements on a whim in the mistaken belief that they 'do us good', then what we will suffer from is imbalance.  As such all hallucinations, near death experiences, visions and so on work via a combination of:
