Category: Illness or disabilities

Introduction and description

Hepatitis is defined as  inflammation of the liver and is characterised by the presence of inflamed cells in the tissue of the organ.   It is a symptom, not a cause.

For more details, please follow the link to  Liver disease.

We also have an entry for Hepatitis virus infection.  But although the group of Hepatitis viruses can all cause hepatitis – liver inflammation – they are not the only viruses that can do this, other example viruses that can also cause liver inflammation include cytomegalovirus, Epstein–Barr virus, yellow fever and even herpes simplex virus.  Furthermore liver inflammation can be caused by heavy alcohol use, certain medications, and toxins.

So, if you have liver inflammation you need to follow the link to  Liver disease  in order to find out the possible cause of that inflammation.

If, on the other hand, you have been diagnosed with a Hepatitis viral infection, you need to follow the link to this section, as this confusingly named group of viruses can be the cause of a great number of diseases related to the other organs of the body.

As you will see if you go to this section, a range of so-called auto-immune diseases can be caused by this family, such as SLE, pancreatic diseases and diabetes mellitus, along with a host of other diseases including cancer and encephalitis.
