Background

A description of the experience

Florence Nightingale – Mystic, Visionary, Healer – Barbara Montgomery Dossey

Of great significance was Florence’s introduction, in February 1848, to Madre Santa Colomba, the mother superior of the Convent Trinita de Monti, who would become her great teacher.  During a 10 day spiritual retreat at the convent, Florence was introduced to formal meditation and contemplation….. Madre Santa Colomba saw something special in the young Englishwoman … at the end of the retreat, Florence recorded this dialogue:

Colomba:  Did not God speak to you during this retreat?  Did he ask you to do anything?

Florence:  He asked me to surrender my will

Colomba:  And to whom?

Florence:  To all that is upon the earth

Colomba:  He calls you to a very high degree of perfection

The source of the experience

Nightingale, Florence
