Hatha Yoga Pradipika – Kundalini description

Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

In all the texts on the kundalini experience, the practise is symbolically described using the nadis  - Ida and Pingala as well as the Shushumna as the reference point and using allegories to describe the effects.
The end result is a text of great beauty and poetry, but not a very good reference manual!
The symbolism of course is deliberate, as it is exceptionally important that techniques as all encompassing and powerful as this are approached gradually with knowledge of their effects and plenty of practise in their subsidiary techniques.

A description of the experience

Hatha Yoga Pradipika

The kundalini is coiled and shaped like a snake. When the shakti moves then there is realization. Of this there is no doubt. (3:108)

The balaranda (Shushumna) lies midway between the Ganges (Ida) and Yamuna (Pingala). When it moves one attains the abode of Lord Vishnu (ecstasy). (3:109)
