Background
From the late 14th to the late 19th century, apoplexy referred to any sudden death that began with a sudden loss of consciousness, especially one in which the victim died within a short time after losing consciousness. Ruptured aortic aneurysms, and even heart attacks and strokes were referred to as apoplexy in the past, because before the use of autopsies in case of sudden death, there was no way of knowing the cause of death.
I think he subconsciously knew his father was ill, but consciously did not

A year afterwards his father was stricken in the cathedral, with an attack of apoplexy; he was carried into a nearby hotel where he expired after some hours.
What was the terror of his son, when, called in haste to the bed of the dying man, he recognised the bed, his father’s posture and the room just as he had seen them in the dream
