Observations placeholder

I was on manouvers at the time and was on roaming picket, guarding our squadron's harbour area at night.  We were expecting an attack by the enemy who were thought to have broken through the front in our area.

One side of the harbour area was bounded by a narrow road through a wood, all our guards should have been on one side of that road.  I patrolled down the road and became aware of movement on the other side.  I challenged and on receiving no reply I fired a blank to arouse the unit.  My blank was answered by a blank from among the trees on the far side of the road.  I returned this fire and during this little fusillade I found that I had left my body and was hovering above the road and could clearly see both myself on one side and my opponent on the other.

The strangest thing was that I could see in the dark, and I recognised the other person as one of our own guards – he had got lost in the dark and had got on the wrong side of the road.
