Toulouse Lautrec - Cafe life

Identifier

Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

In the same way that Henri was able to capture brothel life, his images of cafe life are masterpieces of observation.  Pure perception interpreted for our benefit.  The people he chooses to portray are not the glamorous or attractive, they are those whose lives are hard.  They have pinched faces, are thin and have occasionally a haunted look.  But you do not turn away from these paintings because they are done with humanity.  Here they are, he seems to be saying, this is what diversity is all about.  The paintings are

  • Rice powder 1887
  • The last crumbs 1891
  • Jeanne Wenz 1886
