Messrs. Chamski and Szajkiewicz have just met Ossowiecki for the first time.
Mr. Chamski gives Ossowiecki his nickel watch (with a single case) and asks what is underneath the watch case. Ossowiecki talks about unconnected matters for about 15 minutes, looks at the watch he is still holding, and in the end says he sees nothing.
Dr. S. suggests that perhaps O is tired by the previous experiment and that the experiment should be stopped. However, at the last moment Ossowiecki with-draws his hand with the watch just before handing it back to Chamski, holds it for a moment over the table and says:
"No, definitely there is nothing there. On the inner case there is an engraving of a kind of circle and a number, but apart from that there is nothing."
Chamski says that he recently had a new glass put in the watch but that he forbade the watchmaker to open the case, under which there was a lock of hair. The lock of hair thus must be under the case.
Mr. Ch. opens the case with difficulty, but there is no hair there; however, there is a circle and a number on the inner case.
