Exorcism is an interesting ritual. It is centred on an inanimate object, a ship or home, but it engages the attention of those who live or work there. It makes assumptions, in this case about spirits and the survival of death, which are appropriate to their beliefs.
And it is vital that they take an active part in the ceremony.
It seems to me that what actually happens is that energy is generated, providing new inputs to redress an old imbalance, reprogramming the system with more up-to-date information, charging a house or a watch, a crystal or a ship with energies more appropriate to those who now use it.
