Levetiracetam - marketed under the trade name Keppra . The exact mechanism by which levetiracetam acts to treat epilepsy is unknown. However, the drug binds to a synaptic vesicle protein, SV2A which is believed to impede nerve conduction across synapses [Source Wikipedia]

I have been taking these medications throughout my pregnancy...I informed my doctors of my pregnancy and kept everyone communicating. I was told these were schedule c drugs and that meant they were safe to take during my pregnancy...furthermore, Iwas told keppra was given out to pregnant women "like water"....so I trusted they were safe. Had I known they could cause birth defects alone or in combination, I wouldnt have taken them. My psyciatrist even told me if it were his own daughter that were pregnant...he would recommend these medications. I'm about 20 weeks gestation and they found a membranous vsd in my babys heart. I am going to a pediatric cardiologist/surgeon to futher asess the posibility of other heart defects. I need answers. I need the truth.
