A description of the experience

Mesalazine is also known as Mesalamine  or 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). It is an anti-inflammatory drug used to treat inflammation of the digestive tract, IBS, ulcerative colitis and mild-to-moderate Crohn's disease. It is a derivative of salicylic acid. It is marketed under a variety of brand names:

  • UK: Asacol  , Ipocal, Pentasa, Salofalk, Mezavant XL

  • Ireland: Asacolon, Pentasa, Salofalk, Mezavant XL

  • France: Asacol, Pentasa, Mezavant

  • US: Canasa, Rowasa, Pentasa, Asacol, Lialda, Apriso,Salofalk

  • Canada: Asacol, Pentasa, Salofalk, Mezavant

  • India: Mesacol

  • Mexico: Salofalk

Side effects [apart from the hallucinations] include

  • Diarrhea

  • Nausea

  • Cramping

  • Flatulence

  • Headache

  • Exacerbation of the colitis

  • Hypersensitivity reactions (including rash, urticaria aka hives, interstitial nephritis and lupus erythematosus-like syndrome)

  • Hair Loss

Rare side effects include:

  • Acute pancreatitis

  • Hepatitis

  • Nephrotic syndrome

  • Blood disorders (including agranulocytosis, aplastic anaemia, leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia)

  • Allergic lung reactions

  • Allergic myocarditis

  • Methaemoglobinaemia
